Bustling Byron Bay

A world-famous holiday mecca within easy reach of Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat

Just 40 minutes' drive south from Murwillumbah is the holiday mecca of Byron Bay.

Covering an area of more than 560 square kilometres and comprising a number of towns and villages, the Byron Shire is located at Australia's easternmost point, 180km south of Brisbane, 800km north of Sydney, on Far North Coast of the state of New South Wales.

Home-based businesses comprise much of the alternative, cultural and knowledge industries. For a great day out, shop in the township or dine at one of the brilliant eateries, or visit the renowned Byron Bay markets. The arera benefits from contributions by a diversity of artists, filmmakers and writers. A highlight of the Byron calendar is the Annual East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, also called the BluesFest.

All around the township of Byron Bay are peaceful towns, picturesque villages and tiny hamlets with shops, art galleries and weekend markets offering local arts and crafts. The whole hinterland of the Byron Bay township is a rich patchwork of sugar cane, tropical fruit and macadamia farms on which the area thrives - as well as, of course, tourism. An estimated 1.7 million tourists visit each year.

This doesn't mean that it's all busy. The coastline between Murwillumbah and Byron Bay has some of the world's best surf beaches – watch dozens of surfers enjoying world-class surf waves or stroll along an isolated stretch of white sand with hardly a person in sight.

Byron Bay is Internationally recognised as a must-visit destination in New South Wales. Many of our guests like to make it a day visit and then return to the peace and privacy of their luxury rainforest accommodation at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat.

Cape Byron State Conservation Area

The Cape's lighthouse has stood on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland for a century, and today you can take a tour of the tower. The rugged headland, surrounded by sheltered rainforest gullies and subtropical waters, is a great spot for watching turtles, dolphins and humpback whales on their annual migration.
